Tag Team Parenting

More often than not, I would describe our parenting style as “tag team.” Sometimes Dave is holding the baton, and sometimes I’m holding the baton. And when Chandra isn’t around, the handoff is really, really fast.

One of the days Chandra was on vacation this summer, Dave and I both needed to be at work. So, he took Gigi to the office with him in the morning, and at 11am, I ran (literally) like hell from my office to his, gave Dave a kiss, grabbed Gigi, and left him to travel to Denver (I think) for work. It was freaking hot, and I was exhausted. But, Gigi was being so awesome and easygoing and adaptable, that I couldn’t deny her request when she said, “Bus!” It took us 45 minutes to get home from midtown but she loved every minute of it.

When we got home, she was too excited to sleep. So I put her in her stroller and we set out on an adventure (aka a walk). About 20 minutes in, Georgia Grace began to drift asleep, chocolate ice cream cone in hand.

Bye, Bye, Baby!

To continue with the theme of the day, I’m on my way to Room to Grow — a non-profit organization that ensures babies born into poverty have all they need to succeed in life — to donate most of Gigi’s ‘baby’ stuff that we haven’t yet donated. Maybe I should be sad, but, in all sincerity, I am more excited than anything — we have a happy, healthy two-year old, and I have a tremendous amount of gratitude for that. Also filed under the category of excitement is the fact that heaps and mounds of no longer useful shit will no longer be taking invaluable space in our teeny, tiny Tribeca apartment.

2nd Birthday

Gigi had so much fun on her birthday (almost entirely thanks to Debbie). She got balloons and presents and did all her favorite things: went to the park, ate pancakes, eggs, and ketchup at her favorite diner, rode a choo choo train (subway), a carousel, and a new scooter, baked a cake with her mama, watched Daniel Tiger, FaceTimed with her family, had her favorite pasta for dinner, and of course, blew out candles. She went to bed happy and exhausted.

She started the day with a FaceTime from her big cousin Jack at 7:30 am!

Soon we’ll teach her not to touch the subway pole unless absolutely necessary
